Take Action

As part of this project, we are partnering with community organizations and nonprofits that work towards advancing immigration justice. There are many important organizations doing this work, and we invite you to join us in exploring a few of them and getting involved however you’re able.

New Sanctuary Coalition

New Sanctuary Coalition works to stop the forced isolation of many undocumented people by building a large accompaniment program in which citizens go with immigrants to mandatory ICE check-ins and immigration court hearings. Accompaniment provides citizen-witnesses of ICE’s behavior, emotional support for immigrants and also establishes that our friends have strong ties to the local community.

NSC provides legal support and referrals through programs and clinics staffed by volunteer lawyers and trained laypeople who spread knowledge of immigrants’ rights; assist with asylum applications; advise on pro se defense at court appearances; advocate to increase immigrants’ access in detention centers to legal defense tools (faxes, copiers, etc.) and much more.

Rising Ground - Passage of HoPe

Unaccompanied migrant children are sheltered in a nurturing environment in Yonkers, NY, where they get nutritious food, clothing, and the opportunity to play and learn. We provide clinical, therapeutic, educational, and case management services, while linking them with family members or other sponsors in the United States.

Lend your talents to inspire a child, give a boost to a family, cheer a parent and open a door to a new way of seeing the world. You can volunteer with infants and toddlers, teens and tweens or parents and families. You can teach music, read stories, tutor, assist in a classroom, referee a sporting event — or anything else that gives you joy.

Immigrant Families Together

Immigrant Families Together is a network of Americans committed to rapid response unification of families separated by the 'zero tolerance' policy. IMF mobilizes to help parents currently detained through the following immediate actions:

- Raising of bond funds through coordinated crowdfunding and individual giving in order to post bond for parents separated from their children at the US/Mexico Border

- Paying bonds and providing pro bono legal representation when possible to fulfill all legal responsibilities while awaiting trial so that parents may be with their children

- Arranging safe transportation from state of detention to the city where children are currently in foster care; when needed, finding longterm housing in the destination city while parents await trial

-Connecting parents in cities with resources in order to sustain them during the process of being unified with their children; working with local organizations and government to expedite the process of achieving full custody of their children while they await trial

-Providing food, housing and medical assistance when needed to our families

SAFE PASSAGE PROJECT

Safe Passage Project is a highly-focused nonprofit immigration legal services organization. We provide free lawyers to refugee and immigrant children under the age of 21 in the NYC-area who face deportation back to life-threatening situations, despite their strong legal claim to stay in the US.

Immigrants are not entitled to court-appointed legal counsel. As a result, more than half of immigrant children must go through immigration proceedings without the aid of a lawyer. Safe Passage Project trains pro bono lawyers, law students, and non-attorney volunteers on effective representation of immigrant children.
